FTP issues during fresh installation

Greetings I created a domain setup ftp username and password however when ever i log into the server via ftp i get this..

Code: [Select]
Status: Connecting to 178.79.181.104:21...
Status: Connection established, waiting for welcome message...
Status: Insecure server, it does not support FTP over TLS.
Status: Server does not support non-ASCII characters.
Status: Logged in
Status: Retrieving directory listing...
Command: PWD
Response: 257 "/" is the current directory
Command: TYPE I
Response: 200 Switching to Binary mode.
Command: PASV
Response: 227 Entering Passive Mode (178,79,181,104,95,18).
Command: LIST
Error: Connection timed out after 20 seconds of inactivity
Error: Failed to retrieve directory listing


Any thoughts of what I might have overlooked?

What FTP client are you using?  What operating system and version?  It looks like it worked, but is timing out for some reason.  Check your auth and sys logs to see if anything shows up there.

Thanks i will it is a fresh installation and so i don't understand what went wrong yet.. I will take a look at the logs


I always use Filezilla

Latest Debian installation linode vps provider is where we are hosting it..

I've noticed the same issue in Ubuntu 16.04.  I don't know what's causing it to hang sometimes after the PASV command is issued.  I haven't found anything helpful in the logs either.

It appears you can work around this issue by disconnecting your FTP client and then reconnecting to the server.  It seems to happen randomly...

I'll try to dig into it further, but it could just be a bug with the VSFTPD package.  It works great on my Ubuntu 14.04 server.
